There's An App For That - Studying & Memory

This page provides information on apps that can help improve your study skills and your memory.

Anki & AnkiApp

Anki is a Windows desktop application that lets you create digital flash cards that are easier to remember than traditional flash cards. Anki uses a system called Spaced Repetition (SRS), which assesses how well you remembered each flash card and figures out when you need to review it again.

Once you create cards using text, photos, audio, or video, you can use Anki's spaced repetition system to show you flashcards right when you're about to forget them, instead of looking through every flashcard every time. This not only saves you the time of reviewing cards you already know, but also makes sure that you aren't skipping over ones that you might have forgotten.

AnkiApp is a mobile app for iPhone and Android, which uses an improved form of SRS, built with Artificial Intelligence (AI), to maximize the amount of learning you get done in each study session. When you go to study, the AI chooses which flashcards you need to work on, based on a detailed analysis of your progress. It's like a coach, for your brain.

Make your own flashcards, styled how you like. AnkiApp lets you use colors, bulleted lists, and more. Or search through millions of flashcards that are ready for you to download. Your choice.

Anki Tips
  • Whenever you have material you need to memorize (foreign language words, historic details, names of different bones) create a flash card in a "stack" with the information you need to know.
  • Go through the flashcards daily so you can commit them to memory. As you memorize the cards, this will take less time.
  • Check out shared Anki decks, which offers cards for topics like foreign language, science, and math.

Quizlet

Quizlet’s free study tools are used by millions of students and teachers every day in every country of the world (196 if you’re counting) – from grade school to grad school to language learners to vocational students. We build learning tools that let any level student improve their performance immediately.

Quizlet started in 2005 when the then 15-year-old Andrew Sutherland created it to help him study for a high-school French class. He shared it with his friends, and it grew from there. This is why Quizlet focuses on providing the tools—and lets learners provide the curriculum. It also means Quizlet works with any existing educational system or learning style.

MyScript® Smart Note

MyScript® Smart Note is available for free for both iOS and Android. While the two versions are slightly different in functionality, both have the kind of killer features you want in a note-taking app, namely quite impressive handwriting recognition abilities, often even with a scrawl. Even if your handwriting is mostly legible, Smart Note is pretty accurate in understanding it.

On the Android version, you can have the handwriting converted and replaced by the digital equivalent, so you can easily see what the app thinks you wrote. Unfortunately, that’s not true for the iOS version. However, both versions do recognize handwriting and allow you to search.

With Smart Note, users can:
  • Use simple gestures to edit, such as swiping for vertical spacing.
  • Look up the words they write, either with OS dictionaries, with Google, or Wikipedia.
  • Share their content, with people in their address book contacts, through e-mail, or into other apps like Evernote®, Dropbox®, or social media.

With MyScript® Smart Note, users can write, draw, annotate, and insert pictures into notes. Words and sentences can be quickly moved, split, joined, and erased by simple gestures. Searching for a word or sentences across pages of notes or even notebooks is simple, allowing handwritten notes to be managed with the same ease as any digital document. Users can easily interact with words they have written.

iTunes University

iTunes University (iTunes U for short) has a wealth of curriculum course material from many top universities and colleges. Your own school’s course materials might even be on iTunes U, but if not, you might find similar content from the equivalent courses at other schools. The app is only available for iOS, and content is a mix of text (multiple formats), audio, and video, depending on the content provided by the course content creator.
