Academic Coaching aims to develop successful academic skills and is available to all SDRC students interested in improving time management, organization, note taking, test taking, or other study strategies.
What is Academic Coaching?
Academic Coaching provides a one-on-one experience that helps students develop necessary skills to become successful and self-directed lifelong learners. Through weekly meetings students can get assistance in developing skills that can improve areas such as note taking, time management, organization, planning and prioritizing, test taking, learning style and studying.
Who Are the Coaches?
Academic coaches consist of professional SDRC staff, graduate students, and student assistants who are trained to provide the support and resources needed to enhance the academic success of the students assigned to them.
What Do the Coaches Do?
The primary job of the academic coach is to help students develop effective academic strategies, such as note-taking and study techniques. Coaches can also assist with improving personal management techniques, such as time management and organizational abilities.
Coaches also promote healthy approaches to balancing the demands of college by providing resources and referrals to support services available on campus.

What Does Academic Coaching Involve?
Academic coaching involves weekly meetings between a student and an academic coach to work on the development of skills which can aid in the resolution of academic problem areas. A student Action Plan will be developed to address the problem areas. The action plan will address coordinated steps in achieving academic success by setting goals.
The problem areas, recorded on the student’s action plan, will be targeted by means of skills training, with progress being monitored through progress notes. Information regarding the time and duration of the meetings will be collaboratively determined by the coach and student.
Using the action plan to guide the coaching session, the academic coach may use inquiry, reflection, and discussion to help students identify goals and develop strategies. Students will be held accountable by means of homework and other assignments intended to monitor their progress toward the goals set in the action plan. Students are responsible for their own learning and success. While the academic coach provides feedback, information, and homework to assist the student in achieving their academic goals, the burden of compliance with the program falls on the student.
What Academic Coaching Is Not
The purpose of academic coaching does not include providing course-specific assistance to the struggling student. If these issues are pertinent to the student’s situation, appropriate referrals can be made to the UWF Academic Center for Excellence for tutoring services, Mathematics & Statistics Lab, The UWF Writing Lab, and to Counseling & Psychological Services for mental health counseling.
