UWF Risk Management Information
The University of West Florida administers several insurance programs through various departments.
These summaries are provided for general information purposes only, and cannot be relied on to provide a thorough understanding of the policies or coverage available. Each policy will have detailed provisions and requirements for coverage, premiums, claims, deductibles and other considerations that are not presented here. Insurance policies are subject to frequent changes in terms and conditions. Please contact Environmental Health and Safety if you need information or have questions about any of these policies.
This coverage is provided by the Division of Risk Management (DRM). The policy covers liability for accidents caused by an officer, employee, or officially recognized volunteer (registered through the Office of Human Resources) while operating a motor vehicle in the course and scope of his/her employment or official duties. University departments should ensure that authorized drivers possess a current valid driver’s license. DRM has cautioned that students, acting in that capacity, are not covered by this policy. However, student employees are considered “employees” and would be covered while acting within the course and scope of their employment.
This policy does not cover damage to University-owned vehicles or damages to personal vehicles being driven on official University business. The University driver must pursue damages to his/her vehicle with their personal insurance carrier. To ensure personal insurance is adequate, DRM suggests the employee notify their automobile insurance carrier that the vehicle is used for business purposes and of DRM’s liability coverage.
Each person operating a vehicle for University business should review the following information:

Automobile Additional Coverage
Departments may request coverage for damage to specific University owned vehicles and liability coverage for drivers that are not covered by our Automobile Liability policy. Drivers covered under the policy must be approved by the insurance company. This coverage must be specifically requested in advance and funded by the requesting department.
This coverage is provided by the Division of Risk Management (DRM). The policy protects the University from obligations for damages for injury or loss of property, personal injury, or death caused by a negligent or wrongful act or omission of an officer, employee, or officially recognized volunteer (registered through the Office of Human Resources) while acting within the scope of his/her office or employment. DRM has cautioned that students, acting in that capacity, are not covered by this policy. However, student employees are considered “employees” and would be covered while acting within the course and scope of their employment.
Student Specified Professional Liability
Provides protection against claims for damage or injury due to negligence in the performance of specific coursework in certain medical-related academic programs. The policy provides coverage for the students of the programs specified in the application, but only while participating in activities which are part of and a requirement of the students' curriculum at the University, and faculty members of the University with respect to claims arising out of the supervision/instruction of the insured students for covered incidents. This coverage must be specifically requested in advance and funded by the requesting department.
Camps & Field Trips
Provides Accident and Sickness Insurance coverage for individuals attending University sponsored and supervised camps and field trips. This coverage must be specifically requested in advance and funded by the requesting department.
Departments may purchase commercial general liability insurance when required for special events such as conventions, seminars, walks, festivals and other meetings and gatherings. Contact Environmental Health & Safety if you have questions about this type of coverage.
Property, Buildings, & Contents
The Division of Risk Management provides property damage coverage for University-owned buildings and contents, including contents located in leased or other non-owned facilities. This policy covers damage due to fire, storm, flood, lightning, etc., but does not include theft or vandalism. Employee-owned personal property, and other property that is not owned by the University, is not covered under this policy. Departments which plan to move University property to locations not owned by the University should contact Environmental Health & Safety to coordinate property insurance coverage.
Electronic Data Processing Equipment
This policy provides coverage for listed computer equipment. Non-owned items may be covered against "all risks" of direct physical loss (including computer viruses), except as excluded. Owned items are covered against limited perils not covered by the State Risk Management Trust Fund. This policy covers losses due to theft, but a Police Report must be filed if such property is stolen because the report will be necessary to file a claim.
Broad Form Perils - this policy insures against risk of direct physical loss or damage to the insured property with some exclusions. This coverage must be specifically requested in advance and funded by the requesting department.
Mobile machinery, mobile equipment, vehicles, and other miscellaneous property subject to a transportation feature, including recreational vehicles and trailers. This coverage must be specifically requested in advance and funded by the requesting department.
Boiler & Machinery
Boiler and machinery insurance covers direct, accidental damage to objects within covered locations. There are many restrictions and exclusions and the policy is very complex.
