Off campus and can’t meet with your class? Invite a guest lecturer.

September 15, 2015

Don’t cancel class when a conference or other off-campus obligation conflicts with your class schedule. Instead, create a meaningful learning activity for students to complete while you are away. Several options are possible:

  • Invite a colleague with research interests that support course topics as a guest speaker.
  • If your department has two or more faculty members who regularly teach a section of your course, ask a colleague to fill in while you are away. Be prepared to return the favor when your colleague has a similar conflict!
  • Invite a representative from student support offices in Student Affairs to make a presentation on a topic that will help students manage decisions about their career options; relationships, life, and health decisions; or academic performance.
