Military Connections Committee

The Military Connections Committee helps promote a military-friendly environment by planning and implementing campus events that recognize veterans and their families. The Military Connections committee was begun at the University of West Florida in 2006.

Since that time, the committee has expanded its membership to include active duty and retired military personnel as well as faculty and staff and the education liaisons for both Naval Air Station Pensacola and Whiting Field. The committee welcomes students as well.

The Military Connections committee has at its goals:

To promote awareness of educational and developmental opportunities, campus and community services and support functions available to military personnel, veterans, and their families.

To provide resources and consultation to University departments and offices related to serving the special needs of military personnel, veterans, and their families.

To coordinate and sponsor activities and events on campus to recognize and celebrate military personnel and their contributions.

To advocate in the University of West Florida community and the greater northwest Florida community on behalf of military personnel, veterans, and their families.

Two of the most visible events planned by the Military Connections committee are the Veterans Day event and the Memorial Day observance. The Memorial Day observance is held at the campus flag pole and includes the “laying of the wreath” and playing of "Taps." The Veterans Day recognition includes the MIA/POW ceremony.

The Military Connections Committee is committed to continuing its efforts to foster inclusion on the campus and in the northwest Florida community by partnering with other departments on campus and reaching out to the local community. We support Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo who issued this statement in regard to the 2012 Memorial Day, "we should continue to honor these brave men and women and their dedicated service to our country. The debt owed to them is immeasurable." If you are interested in learning more about Military Connections, contact us at lwiley@uwf.edu or by phone at 850-474-2384.
