Preparing for Your Appointment

To maximize your appointment, Career Services has created some guidance on how to best prepare for your meeting with our career coaches.

Resume

Before coming to our office for a resume appointment, please complete as many of the following steps as possible.
  1. Review the Career Development Guide (pp. 14-18).
  2. Bring a list of past employment positions and associated duties, campus involvement, volunteer work, military experience, etc.
  3. Consider building a resume in Optimal Resume to familiarize yourself with the various sections of your resume. Bring this is in with you to the appointment to receive feedback.


Career/Major Coaching

Prepare for your career or major coaching appointment by reviewing the following steps.
  1. Review the Career Development Guide (pp. 2-7).
  2. Browse myplan.com and MyCareerShines for information on various careers. 
  3. Take a look at the UWF catalog and identify majors that pique your interest.
  4. Review videos of individuals in the positions/fields/industries you are interested in pursuing through Candid Careers.
  5. Talk to your academic advisor about specific requirements you have and have not met.


Experiential Learning

Experiential learning appointments can involve internships, cooperative education, service learning and volunteer opportunities.
  1. Review the Career Development Guide (pp. 8-9).
  2. Understand possible areas of interest and industries you would like to explore with an experiential learning opportunity.
  3. Consider the distance you are willing to travel for the internship or volunteer experience.
  4. Research your major/department website for any internship/CoOp requirements. Also, conjure up some local/national employers interested in gaining an internship.
  5. Speak with advisor to see if you have space in your coursework to complete an internship if you are doing it for academic credit.
  6. Update your resume using Optimal Resume.
  7. Review videos of individuals in the positions/fields/industries you are interested in pursuing through Candid Career.


Mock Interviews

Mock interviews require the most preparation, but are so valuable in the job search process. Before you can participate in a mock interview, you must complete these steps.
  1. Review the interview materials in the Career Development Guide (pp. 26-29).
  2. Watch the Mock Interview Training Video located in the Resource Library of JasonQuest (through myUWF).
  3. Email your preferred job description and resume to the person you are meeting with (or career@uwf.edu and reference Mock Interview Appointment). These documents must be received at least 24 hours prior to your mock interview appointment.
  4. Dress for success! Come to your mock interview appointment in professional attire (p. 28), just as you would a real job interview.
  5. Bring your resume.
  6. If you would like to be recorded, bring a USB thumb drive or blank disc.
  7. Strongly encouraged: For extra practice, complete a virtual mock interview using InterviewStream. Follow these instructions to complete a mock interview using InterviewStream.


Job Search Strategies & Graduate School

Before coming into our office for a job search or graduate school appointment, complete as many of the following steps as possible.

Job Search Strategies

  1. Review the Career Development Guide (pp. 3; 24-25).
  2. Know yourself: what you want, where you want it to be, VIPS, etc.
  3. Review videos containing job search strategies through Candid Career.
  4. Update your resume, or create one using Optimal Resume.
  5. Familiarize yourself with common interview questions and begin practicing your responses using Optimal Interview.

Graduate School

  1. Review the Career Development Guide (pp. 22-23).
  2. Identify a few colleges or universities that interest you.
  3. Begin a draft of your CV (curriculum vitae).
  4. Draft a personal statement or letter of intent using the resources listed in the Career Development Guide.
