Named Top Military-Friendly Institution
The December edition of Military Advanced Education (MAE) has named
the University of West Florida to its "2008 Top Military Friendly
Colleges and Universities" list. Selection was conducted by an
independent panel of judges from the fields of education and the military.
Selections were based on each institution's favorable policies toward
men and women in uniform. The publication invited more than 2,000 colleges
and universities to participate and only 60 schools received the honor.

Alumni Turning Science Fiction into Science Fact
In what may seem like science fiction, two University of West Florida
Chemistry alumni are working diligently to find ways to restore and
re-grow damaged tissue. Benjamin Harrison,'98 and Sarah
Genet,'08 are working at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative
Medicine under a $42.5 million grant to co-lead with the McGowan Institute
for Regenerative Medicine, one of two academic groups that will form
the Armed Forces Institute of Regenerative Medicine (AFIRM). AFIRM will
be dedicated to repairing battlefield injuries through the use of a
science that takes advantage of the body's natural healing powers to
restore or replace damaged tissue and organs. Link: UWF

Intern Learning the Ropes at "The View"
Every day Keith Quinones, communication arts student, is faced with
new adventures during his internship with ABC's hit television show
"The View." Each day is unique working in a different area
of production, but he wouldn't have it any other way. Some days he shadows
producers or works in the editing room, control room or graphics department.
Other days he braves the New York cold to greet audience members. He's
even delivered packages to Sherri Shepherd's apartment and Whoopi Goldberg's
office. Link: UWF

First
Generation College Students Receive Scholarship Support
UWF serves a high proportion of first generation students who have
substantial financial needs. In an effort to ease the financial burden
on these students, UWF established the First Generation Scholarship
in 2006. During the spring 2009 semester, 428 UWF students received
the First Generation Scholarship. Nick Garner is one of these students.
With boundless energy, Garner is a self-professed overachiever. A senior
majoring in organizational communication, he also serves as a student
ambassador, orientation leader, student government association representative
and founding father of the Lambda Beta Chapter for UWFs Sigma
Chi Fraternity. But the most significant role that Garner has inherited
is being a first generation college student. Link: Creating
