Experiencing first-hand the fury of Mother Nature as a storm approaches land. Learn how hurricanes and events of nature have impacted Florida throughout history, from the earliest attempts to settle our new world, to the latest changes in our coastal landscape.

Through hands-on displays designed to be both fun and educational, visitors will engage in the latest techniques in preparing for, surviving and rebuilding after a storm. See replicas of environmental satellites, vital tools for forecasting hurricanes, protecting water supplies and predicting global warming.

The Hurricane Exhibit

  • Interactive kiosk where visitors can participate in web based environmental education programs
  • Learn how scientific research is increasing the accuracy of hurricane tracking and modeling.
  • Interact with the latest technology used to monitor storm development and track movement.
  • Learn about global-climate features that throughout history have influenced hurricane development.
  • Collect information that enables the forecasting of coastal vulnerability and change.
  • Explore the inner workings, or “anatomy,” of a hurricane through photos, 3-D models and digital animations,

This exhibit and education center will be an integral component to the museum’s educational outreach programs. At the core of these efforts will be an active program for K-12 school groups, developed with input from community teachers, educators, and environmental leaders.

  • Integration of education programs to encourage visitors to make informed decisions to protect the environment throughout their lifetime.
  • Learn methods used to safely prepare for, survive and rebuild after a storm.
  • Central area utilized during museum sponsored workshops and science based activities including Summer Science Camps where enrolled children will have opportunities to study meteorology, underwater archaeology, coastal ecology, maritime preservation, and more.
