Course Description:
This non-credit short course is designed to provide students with an extensive understanding of the origins, evolution and consequences of the institutions and culture of Nazi Germany. The ascendancy of Adolf Hitler and the subsequent destruction of traditional European culture following the First World War will be thoroughly examined. Additionally, various military and political leaders and their associated organizations within the Nazi Party will be studied and discussed.
At the conclusion of this course the student will have a sound understanding of the rise of fascism in Europe, the Nazi Party in Germany, and the military-political developments between the world wars that led Germany to destruction. Students will also be able to recognize and explain the meaning of the myriad organizations that were closely identified with the Nazi Party and its association with the German military structure during the existence of the Third Reich. Instructor Biography:
Dr. Derek S. Zumbro is a former Navy Special Warfare (SEAL) officer who served numerous tours of duty in Europe and the Middle East. He attended the University of Heidelberg during his doctoral candidacy, and he holds a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. Dr. Zumbro is currently instructing as a visiting professor at the University of West Florida. His translations of German battle accounts have been widely used in televised documentaries and his published works include the award-winning books In Deadly Combat: A German Soldier’s Memoir of the Eastern Front and The Battle for the Ruhr: The German Army’s Final Defeat in the West.
