Jay Gould earned a Ph.D. in psychology (majoring in biological psychology and minoring in neurophysiology and comparative psychology) at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he studied the neural mechanisms of visual perception and attention in monkeys at the Brain Research Institute.  Following that, he completed a two-year postdoctoral involving interdisciplinary research training in biological sciences as related to mental health.

Dr. Gould has been a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of West Florida since 1973, and was Chair of the Department for five years.  He has twice been a recipient of the distinguished Teaching Incentive Program Award for outstanding teaching.  His current research interests are electrophysiological correlates of cognition in humans, and the cognitive capacities of non-human primates, especially the great apes.

Dr. Gould has served on and chaired a variety of university committees, including the Academic Council, Intercollegiate Athletic Advisory Committee, Animal Care and Use Committee, Library Committee, Library Program and Building Committee, Search Committee for Director of the Library, and the Facilities Planning Committee.

In addition, he served as a member of the Principal Committee on Undergraduate Programs for UWF’s SACS accreditation Institutional Self-Study (1992-1994), and later on the SACS Governance and Administration Self-Study Task Force (2003-2005).

Since 1978 he has frequently been elected by his colleagues to the Faculty Senate at UWF, and in addition to serving as a member of its Academic Policies Committee, he has chaired several of its committees--including the Graduate Programs Committee, Special Issues Committee, Governance Committee, and Executive Committee.  He also served as President of the Faculty Senate in 1995-96, and after a two-year term as vice president, was again elected President for 2005-2007.  Dr. Gould was also a member of the Board of Trustees where he represents all the faculty at UWF.

In the community and profession, Dr. Gould has been President of the Northwest Psychological Association for a great many years, and from 2000-2004 he was President of the Gulf Coast Zoological Association, which is responsible for the operation and growth of The Zoo near Gulf Breeze, Florida.  Currently he serves on its Board of Directors as Immediate Past President.
