Jesse Thomas
Jesse Thomas was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. He received his B.S degree in Environmental Science with a concentration in microbial ecology from Florida A&M University in 2009. He is currently a M.S. student in Florida A&M University’s School of the Environment, where he is investigating the biodegradative potential and functional diversity of estuarine bacteria in Apalachicola Bay, Fl. Jesse utilizes a number of cutting-edge molecular techniques such as PCR-cloning, automated ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (ARISA), and pyrosequencing in conjunction with traditional cultivation methods to explore bacterial diversity at the taxonomic and functional level. Jesse is particularly interested in the metabolic capabilities of microbes that comprise the microbiome of larger organisms and how bacterial heterotrophy aids in cycling recalcitrant carbon substrates such as crude oil, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and cellulose. He hopes that his research will identify novel microogranisms that can be utilized in the bioremediation of contaminated sites and biofuel production. |
