The Office of Diversity and International Education and Programs is happy to announce opportunities for Summer Study Abroad. Summer experiences offer a chance to study for a shorter term and for less money than traditional semester-long programs. Students have the opportunity to earn UWF credit while studying in another country and experiencing a new culture. Applicants for Study Abroad Programs must have a minimum 2.5 GPA; some programs require a higher GPA. Information about Summer Study Abroad opportunities is listed below.
Expenses vary by program. Unless otherwise noted for an individual program:

- Airfare, passport and other travel fees are NOT included in cost estimates.

Costa Rica – Spanish Language Immersion
- The University of Costa Rica offers one-month Intensive Spanish courses in June and July. The program is designed for full immersion into Spanish language. Classes meet on weekday mornings. Instructional fees for each month-long course are $600. Students live with a local Costa Rican family during their entire stay; cost is $425 per month and includes breakfast and dinner daily. France & Belgium – Angers Summer Program
- The Angers Summer Program is located at ESSCA in Angers, France. This program is for College of Business majors and has limited places for applicants from around the world. Students take courses in European Union Studies, European Economics, and Culture and Communication; all courses are taught in English. The program begins with three weeks of study in Angers, France; students travel to Brussels, Belgium for site visits and meetings in Week 4, and Paris, France, for debriefing in Week 5. Finland - Eastern Finland International Summer
- Eastern Finland International Summer Term is co-hosted by Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences. Students may have options for shorter or longer length of stay. Courses offered will be in Business and Computer Science; all courses are taught in English. Application deadline is March 17, 2009. Tuition is paid to UWF. http://www.efist.org/
Ulm, Germany – International Summer School, Intensive German Language
- International Summer at Universitat Ulm provides an opportunity for Intensive German language study and an optional second course in European Union and Germany or Practical Training in Physics. European Union and Physics courses are taught in English. The eight-week program offers classes Monday through Thursday with weekends free for traveling and excursions from June2 through July 30, 2009. The deadline for application materials to be completed is February 8, 2008. If approved and accepted, program and accommodation fees are due in full by April 11, 2009. Tokyo, Japan – Summer Session of Asian Studies at Sophia University
- Sophia University in Tokyo is offering a Summer Session of Asian Studies in 2008. Students can take two courses during the three-week program from July 29 to August 18, 2009. Courses are taught in English. Application Deadline is June 7, 2009. All application materials must be completed and returned to Building 71 by that date. Summer Semester in Japan – 2009 Topic: Hospitality
- Students interested in applying for a place in the 17th Summer Semester in Japan Program can pick up an application in building 71. The topic is Hospitality and students will study in Tokyo, Japan. Application Deadline is March 6, 2009. The five students selected for the program will receive travel and accommodation scholarships for the six-week program and are responsible for paying nine credit hours tuition, meals, and spending money. Two courses are taught by a UWF professor who travels with the group; the third course is Japanese language. All courses are taught in English. Tuition is paid to UWF. Cambridge University – International Summer School
- The Office of Diversity and International Education and Programs will be assisting students with the application process for summer abroad programs at the University of Cambridge in Great Britain. The program offers a variety of subjects in two-, three-, and four-week options. Students receive instruction from Cambridge professors. Application and program down payment is due no later than April 17, 2009. Program fee must be paid in full by May 1, 2009. Students can pay tuition to UWF or UCF.
Bielefeld, Germany – European Summer School
- The University of Applied Science Bielefeld will present the 1st Annual European Summer School over six weeks in May and June of 2009 in Bielefeld, Germany. The programs two courses focus on European politics, economics and cultures. Courses will include excursions to Berlin, Frankfurt, and Students can earn up to eight credit hours if they enroll in the optional labs. The Cost estimate is $5,500: $2,300 housing, $1,500 meals, $1,000 airfare, plus tuition paid to UWF (Exchange rate may affect final cost.) Interested students must apply by the February 8th Deadline at UWF. This program is for Business, Political Science, and International Studies majors. 5 spaces in the program will be reserved for UWF students. Please note this program does not meet the study abroad requirement for Global Economics or Global Marketing majors.
Málaga, Spain UWF Language and Culture Institute
- The UWF Language and Culture Institute will offer two programs in Spain this summer. The inauguration of these two programs coincides with the 450th anniversary of the first settlement of Pensacola by the De Luna expedition, and will form part of community-wide activities focusing on strengthening ties between Spain and Pensacola.
- Intensive Spanish Language Program.
- The four-week Intensive Spanish Language Program will be held at the University of Málaga in the city of Málaga in southern Spain from May 3-30. Participants can earn 8 hours of UWF credit for SPN1120C and SPN1121C or may choose a different combination of courses. Those wishing to take upper division courses should contact Dr. Diane Buck at 850-474-3221. It can also be done on a non-credit basis. The cost of the program is $2,675. The price includes orientation, tuition, housing and three meals a day with Spanish families and access to campus facilities such as libraries and sports installations. Language instruction is from 9-2 Monday-Friday. There will be fifteen extra hours per week of organized language-related cultural and recreational activities evenings and weekends. Some scholarship aid may be available. International airfare and passport fees are not included.
- Interdisciplinary Intercultural Travel and Study Program in Spain
- The 14-day Interdisciplinary Travel and Study Program in Spain (June 15-28) is being offered for students, professors, and adult learners on a credit or non-credit basis. The trip will provide an opportunity for participants to have an intensive intercultural experience and, upon request, to focus on specific academic topic areas during the trip. A maximum of 3 credit hours can be earned in some UWF departments with advance arrangements made through the individual department. Tuition is included in the price. General lectures on a wide variety of topics (history, literature, art, Spanish popular culture, politics, tourism, recreation and leisure management) will be provided by UWF faculty members and by Spanish lecturers. The cost of the trip is $2,850 and includes travel within Spain, two meals daily, lodging in 3-star hotels, entrance fees for museums, and guides. The tour will include the cities of Málaga, Granada, Marbella, Ronda, Sevilla, Cáceres, Trujillo, and Madrid. International airfare and passport fees are not included.

Summer at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, China
- Lingnan University in Hong Kong, China will present Summer Exchange Programmes for five weeks from May 26 through June 30, 2009. Courses in Language, Social Science, Business and Humanities will be offered. A Service Learning course is also available and students in that course will have additional project and service time outside of the classroom. Students pay tuition to UWF. The Housing fee is approximately $350 for the full program. The Application deadline at UWF is March 6th. Intensive Portuguese in Brazil
- UWF is happy to offer a six-weeks program in Intensive Portuguese Language and Brazilian Culture at the University of Viçosa in Viçosa, Brazil. The program will run from the end of May to early July. Students pay tuition to UWF. Viçosa fees are $1,200 for Housing, Meals, onsite program fee. Students will have opportunities for excursions to other locations in Brazil during the program. The Application deadline is April 3rd.
AustraLearn, AsiaLearn and EuroLearn Programs
- The programs of GlobaLinks offer a variety of topics and locations for Summer programs. Current offerings include five programs in Asia, eleven programs in Australia, and three programs in Europe. Tuition is not paid to UWF. Transfer Credit is granted. Deadlines and Prices vary for the programs. Length of Programs is at least ten days up to seven week durations. UWF Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship
- The University of West Florida Foundation offers scholarships based on financial need, statement of purpose and academic achievement. Students applying for the Foundation Scholarship must have completed the application for their chosen program by the Scholarship Application Deadline of February 16, 2009. Scholarship applicants who have not completed their program application will not be considered. The UWF Foundation Study Abroad Scholarship is open to students applying to any location for Summer 2009, Fall 2009, and Spring 2010.

Summer programs have the same requirements for eligibility and application as fall/spring exchanges. Application materials and deadlines vary and additional items may be required for some programs. Students must apply through the Office of Diversity and International Education and Programs. All participants must attend an orientation before they leave UWF for their abroad experience.
