The ODIEP requires that students participating in a Study Abroad Program make sure that their medical insurance provides coverage while they are in another country. Please review with your parents your medical insurance policy and look to see if it provides “worldwide coverage” or “international coverage.” It is very important that participating students have medical coverage during the time they will be traveling (to and from the U.S.) as well as during their stay in another country. The ODIEP strongly recommends that the student or a parent contact the carrier to confirm both that the coverage is adequate during travel to and from the U.S. and that it will be valid while abroad. Adequate coverage entails:
• Coverage for injury or urgent illness incurred outside of the United States
• Coverage equal to or greater than $50,000 for each injury/illness
• Emergency evacuation insurance, for expenses incurred through medical-assisted evacuation to the closest appropriate medical facility or for the U.S. or the student’s country of residence.
The International Student Identity Card (ISIC), which the ODIEP provides to students who participate in the Study Abroad Program does include some emergency and medical evacuation insurance-though on a reimbursement basis only. It also does not cover expenses related to mental illness or substance-related injuries. An International Student ID Card enables you to receive discounts. The ISIC can be purchased at the International Center, Building 71. Cost is $22. There is an expanded insurance coverage available as well. Cost is $68 and includes the ISIC. Call 474-2479 for more information about purchasing the ISIC at UWF, or contact Student Travel Agencies at 1-800-777-0112. For more information about ISIC, visit www.myISIC.com.
The ODIEP suggests that students or their parents check with the insurance carrier for instructions on how to file a claim, if necessary. Students may need to take claim forms with them when they go abroad. We strongly encourage students to carry a internationally recognized credit card to cover any out-of-pocket expenses that the insurance company requires be paid in advance. Students are also encouraged to carry their insurance ID card with them at all times.
