Student Academic Support Services

HMCSE is committed to providing academic support systems which are devoted to student retention, graduation, and professional success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs (STEM). Academic support programs provide additional resources for STEM majors both in and out of the classroom.

Student Academic Support Services

The academic rigor of STEM programs dictates the necessity for resources which provide practical and application-based learning opportunities as well as faculty mentoring for students. In collaboration with HMCSE faculty, the following academic support services are designed to encourage success and are provided at no cost to students.

Recitation

Recitation is a required component for several mathematics and physics courses. Students will utilize a weekly class meeting to practice skills learned in lecture.

Workshops

Workshops are designed for students to solve problems using techniques learned during lecture courses. Under the leadership of faculty, workshops are led by student facilitators on a weekly basis to reinforce classroom knowledge.  Workshops are optional although most faculty offer incentives for attendance.  Workshops are currently offered for BSC 2010 Biology I, CHM 2045 General Chemistry I, PHY 2048 Physics with Calculus I, MAC 2311 Calculus I, MAC 2312 Calculus II, and MAC 2233 Business Calculus.

Tutoring

Tutoring services are provided in a variety of subjects and locations on campus.  Tutoring is available in general education courses as well as many of the STEM programs.

For STEM tutoring services offered by the Office of Academic Success & Innovative Strategies, please see the departmental information below (Fall and Spring only:).

  • The Department of Chemistry offers tutoring for CHM 1020 Concepts in Chemistry, CHM 1032 Fundamentals of Chemistry, CHM 2045 General Chemistry I, CHM 2046 General Chemistry II, CHM 2210, Organic Chemistry I, and CHM 2211 Organic Chemistry II.
  • The Departments of Computer & Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering offer tutoring sessions for students at both campus locations.
A complete listing of courses by location for Fall, Spring and Summer are located on the Engineering website.
  • The Department of Computer Science offers tutoring sessions for introductory programming courses as well as a variety of courses required for the program.
A comprehensive listing is available on the Computer Science website.
  • The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides individual tutoring for UWF students for most 1000/2000 level mathematics courses.

Professional Development Academy

Professional preparation is key to career training and development. The Professional Development Academy strives to provide educational experiences for students to be successful in the STEM world. To ensure STEM majors are trained and qualified to enter the workforce, students need access to workforce readiness programs and resources which provide real-world experiences.  In an effort to create these experiences, HMCSE has collaborated with Career Services and academic departments.
