Staff
Staff will be available to help you use the facilities and to answer
questions of a technical or mechanical nature. Lab staff are not available
to do course work or do your homework. The lab is striving to provide
expertise and reference materials in as many areas as possible, but every
staff person will not be an expert in every area of software. Please be
sensitive to the fact that it is important for the lab staff to be available
to all users who need their help. If you need more help than the lab staff
can provide, please seek additional assistance from your instructor or check
on the availability of individual tutoring.
If you have any questions please email: jpowell@students.uwf.edu or leave a message at 474-2592.
SOFTWARE:
Computers in the lab contain a variety of software packages. These packages
include word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software,
programming languages, e-mail, Internet access, and LUIS (Library Users
Information System.). Some software packages are only available to students
enrolled in a particular course. Users are not allowed to install any software
on a lab PC.
HOUSE RULES:
Lab facilities are first come first serve. When the lab is full and others are waiting please be courteous and insure that you are doing necessary work,
not just "surfing the net" or answering personal e-mail. If a workstation is
unoccupied for more than 15 minutes (the screen saver will come on), your work
will be saved, your diskette will be placed in the staff office, and the next
person waiting will be given use of the PC. Lab behavior is expected to project
a feeling of professionalism in a quiet library-like atmosphere where users can
work without undue interruptions or disturbances.
EQUIPMENT USE:
Recreation computer games are not permitted. Any unauthorized software or personal
files left on the hard drive of a PC will be promptly removed. You may save your
work to your network home directory or to a floppy diskette (3.5" high density required.)
You may purchase floppy diskettes in the book store. If you experience a hardware or
software problem do not attempt to fix it yourself. Notify the lab staff. Operate the
equipment with respect and care. When you are done using the equipment, clean up your
work area. Trash cans and paper recycle bins are available.
PRINTING:
Printing is limited to your personal paper supply. Pornography of any kind is strictly
prohibited. Print only one copy of each document. If you need duplicates, use the
copy machine.
KNOW THE RULES:
Failure to comply with lab rules and procedures, posted bulletins, and the university code
criminal charges. Computer services staff reserve the right to temporarily or permanently
revoke a user's access to the lab and to lab services with or without warning. All
disciplinary actions will be taken accordance with the policies of the University of West
Florida and the laws of the State of Florida.
LAB RULES:
1. Lab facilities are to be used for academic purposes only.
2. Pornography of any kind is strictly prohibited.
3. Absolutely no eating, drinking, or tobacco products are allowed in
the lab areas.
4. Printing is limited to your personal paper supply. Only one copy is allowed.
5. Do not alter the configuration of
lab hardware or software.
6. No foul language or displays of temper toward lab assistants. Equipment abuse will not be
tolerated.
7. Do not copy licensed software. It is illegal.
8. Files saved to the local hard drive are routinely removed. Save your work to a floppy or to your home directory on the network.
