	<title>Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory</title>
	<description>
	The students visit Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a premier applied science laboratory that is part of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) within the Department of Energy (DOE). For security reasons, the students were unable to photograph or record video during their tour of the facility; therefore, they take a unique approach to sharing the information they learned. LLNL has been managed since its inception in 1952 by the University of California for the U.S. government. As a national security laboratory, LLNL is responsible for ensuring that the nation's nuclear weapons remain safe, secure and reliable through application of advances in science and engineering. With its special capabilities, the laboratory also meets other pressing national security needs, which include countering the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and strengthening homeland security against the terrorist use of such weapons.

	<title>The Nevada Test Site</title>
	<description>
	The students take a tour of the Nevada Test Site, a massive outdoor laboratory and national experimental center. Larger than the state of Rhode Island, approximately 1,375 square miles, the Nevada Test Site is one of the largest restricted access areas in the United States. The remote site is surrounded by thousands of additional acres of land withdrawn from the public domain for use as a protected wildlife range and for a military gunnery range, creating an unpopulated land area comprising some 5,470 square miles. Established as the Atomic Energy Commission's on-continent proving ground, the Nevada Test Site has seen more than four decades of nuclear weapons testing.

	<description>
	Students in the "Route 66" course head for Chama, N.M. First taking a quick stop at the Echo Amphitheatre, the group then visits the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Built 126 years ago and little changed since, the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad is a 64-mile, fully-operational steam railroad jointly owned by the states of Colorado and New Mexico. The railroad is recognized around the world for its spectacular scenery and unspoiled vistas, as well as the historic rolling stock and railroad structures that are preserved on the line. Many of the buildings and railroad equipment date to the turn of the 20th century or earlier, making the CTS the best preserved steam era railroad in North America.

	<description>
	On Independence Day, the students visit Bandelier National Monument. The ancestors of modern Pueblo people built thriving communities in the area called Bandelier about 600 years ago. Several thousand Ancestral Pueblo dwellings are found among the pink mesas and sheer-walled canyons. The best-known archeological sites, in Frijoles Canyon, were inhabited from the 1100s into the mid-1500s. Following their tour of the monument, the students enjoy Fourth of July festivities in White Rock, N.M.
