The Public History programs at the University of West Florida and the University of Southwestern Louisiana are working together to form an organization for applied history practitioners working throughout the Gulf Coast. Although potential members include those working with history in museums, historical societies, state and national parks, preservation boards, archives, and other organizations, we encourage anyone working with history to consider participation.
While there are literally hundreds of us working in these fields, there are unfortunately very few opportunities or mediums for us to communicate with other professionals outside our immediate areas. Although the National Council on Public History (NCPH) provides a loose national network, the Gulf South Public History Association will be an important first step toward a regional network.
Serving as a valuable tool for applied history practitioners, this organization will facilitate direct communication between institutions and programs and create an invaluable network for professionals. Additionally, it will establish a useful forum for sharing ideas, developing projects and publicizing resources.
If you need additional information or would be interested in participating, please give us a call or send us an e-mail. We look forward to hearing from you soon.
