GIS Certificate
Program Overview: This stand alone, 24 credit hour, one year program is designed for current and aspiring practitioners who want to learn a cutting-edge technology and gain practical and up-to-date experience working with GIS related software 100% online. UWF has offered the online GIS Certificate Program since 2006 and is known for its quality online courses and service to military students. This program is intended for working professionals (vs. traditional, full-time students) or those who prefer to study part-time and at a distance.
Who is Eligible? Anyone interested in learning GIS is eligible to enroll in our undergraduate level GIS courses. No prerequisites are required.
- Students with a strong desire to learn GIS at the college level are encouraged to apply. Applicants showing genuine interest are preferred.
- To obtain the GIS Certificate, students enroll in 24 credit hours (7 courses) at the Undergraduate level.
- Students who pass each class with a C or better and earn a 3.0 GPA average over 24 credit hours will be awarded a GIS Certificate.
- Credit hours will transfer into several UWF undergraduate programs - as well as programs outside UWF.

FAQ - Undergraduate Certificate
Who is Eligible? Anyone with a baccalaureate degree is eligible to enroll in the UWF graduate-level GIS certificate program. A bachelor's degree must be in hand before enrolling in graduate-level courses. The GRE is not required to enroll.
- Students with a bachelor's degree can earn up to 12 hours of graduate credit by completing our Graduate Certificate in GIS
- To earn the Graduate GIS Certificate, students enroll in 12 credits at the Undergraduate level and 12 credits at the Graduate level.
- Students who pass each class with a C or better and earn a 3.0 GPA average over 24 credit hours will be awarded a Graduate GIS Certificate.
- Credit hours are transferable.

- Students "go to class" on their own time to view lectures and complete weekly assignments through UWF eLearning. Familiarize yourself with our online learning portal before applying to the program.
- All of our courses are instructor led with various means of communication and interaction.
- Students are expected to spend approximately 8-15 hours per week on course materials and assignments.
- Former students have reported spending as many as 20 hours per week on assignments.
- Our program utilizes e-Desktop for GIS to provide virtual software access to students 24/7. ArcGIS for Desktop Advanced 10.1, ERDAS Imagine 2010, and Adobe Illustrator CS5 are primary GIS related softwares utilized to complete course assignments.
- eDesktop for GIS is MAC and PC friendly.
- Even though students will not be installing GIS software on their personal machines, we recommend the following hardware requirements listed on ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 System Requirements page.
- UWF GIS students are permitted one free copy each of ArcGIS Desktop student version license. No other student versions licenses are offered.
- To enroll in Online GIS courses, prospective students must apply and be accepted in the program.
- Students should be fairly knowledgeable about computers and how to navigate the internet. We will jump right in to GIS software and will not have time to teach these basic computer skills. Students who are comfortable navigating the internet, exploring new software programs and troubleshooting will do well in this program.
- In order to participate, students must have consistent access to a computer or laptop with at least broadband/high speed internet access.
- A computer or laptop capable of running ArcGIS 10.1 student version software is recommended. ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 System Requirements.
- Although there are not requirements associated with English proficiency for this program, all course materials are presented in the English language. Furthermore, GIS students are required to complete course assignments in English.
- Network of classmates coming from various backgrounds and experiences from around the globe.
- The GIS certificate courses can be used to help fulfill a student's educational requirement when applying to become a GISP
