A variety of options exist for those seeking training in the use of GIS software.
The GeoData Center runs no-cost training workshops for university faculty, staff and graduate students who are interested in using GIS for research or instruction. These courses are typically offered 2-3 times per semester. Representatives from local nonprofit organizations are also welcome to participate if space is available.
The Division of Continuing Education's GIS Training Academy offers training in beginning ArcGIS software in both online and face-to-face courses. Sessions held on the UWF campus are generally intensive all-day events lasting two or three days. When offered online, training courses take place over 6 weeks. The GeoData Center's ESRI site license grants us unlimited access to ESRI virtual-campus software training courses. While these courses typically cost $40 -$150, UWF faculty, staff and students can be given access to many of these courses at no cost. UWF students, faculty, and staff can enroll in GIS academic courses through the Department of Environmental Studies or complete the GIS Certificate program. This program. offered at both graduate and undergraduate level, combines GIS theory and application and contains extensive use of current GIS technologies including ESRI software.
UWF offers in-house GIS training for group of 5 of more. Courses can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the group.
Many books are available that include ArcGIS training material and exercises. Books published through ESRI press such as Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktopand the GIS Tutorial series contain a trial version of the software, tutorial exercises and example datasets. Many of these books are available in our GeoSpatial Library for use in the laboratory only.
