Idrisi Kilimanjaro
Idrisi Kilimanjaro is available for campus use. To request an install
please fill out a request for services. Please note the FAQ on connecting to the license server. This
patch will reset this variable so you will need to reconnect. 1st service pack updates
Student IMS / SDE
A student only Internet Mapping Server w/SDE capabilities is now available for taught courses.
This machine can also host developmental Internet GIS applications.
Lab Funding
Funding for the GIS Research Lab, an extension of the Geodata center, has been
approved. This facility will house 5-6 high-end workstations for advanced GIS
research. These pc's are now running in 13/222. We also have a new 1200 DPI Plotter in 215.
SDE Available
Step 4, the final step, of the migration to a central GIS infrastructure is
complete.
4TB of central SDE storage is now available. You may store your data in any
projection. Please copy datasets before editing. To access this storage use
ArcCatalog to connect to the SDE service then add the data in ArcMap. An SDE
training session will be scheduled.
ArcGIS Updates
ArcGIS 9.1 raster patch should be installed
Image Conversions
The MrSid image conversion license has arrived and can be accessed through ArcMap.
GIS Extensions
http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisxtensions/index.html
New extensions are available. We have access to all but one or two of them.
Please click on the new extensions link to view. Most of them are already active
on the server.
ArcEditor
ArcEditor is now available as a “stand alone” install. Formerly
only network users could access ArcEditor so it was underused (people used info
instead). ArcEditor is a product that has more capabilities (particularly in
editing) than ArcView but less than ArcInfo. It is good for laptop users who
may not be on the network. I use this product on my laptop. Most if not all
the extnsions are now available for this product. Drop me a line if you would
like a copy. Other products recently arrived include GDT street data for ArcPad
and new GPS tools for ArcGIS 8.3.
IMS services
Research IMS services can now be found on the HAAS serve and is available for grant use..
ArcGIS 9.1
ArcGIS 9.1 has arrived. We now have the ability to do remote installs of ESRI
software over the LAN.
MapObjects 2.2 has arrived
http://www.esri.com/software/mapobjects/index.html
MO allows programmers, novice or expert, to add GIS functionality to their applications.
This software retails for approx $5000. Due to the fact MO works in conjunction
with Visual Studio it will not be installed in the Lab but can be installed
on request.
ERDAS Imagine 8.7
New functionality includes geo-database support and much more. Users of this
program in the department say that when dealing
with raster data Imagine is far more powerful than ArcInfo. Imagine 8.7 is installed
and running on all machines in the Lab.
New GDT Street Data
http://www.esri.com/data/download/gdt/index.html
New GDT road attribute data are here. For anyone using TIGER centerlines
or similar products GDT offers a substantially richer attribute set with more
accurate geometry and topology. Good for address matching? This is not a program
so will not be installed in the lab, it is available upon request.
ArcPad 6
http://www.esri.com/software/arcpad/index.html
ArcPad provides database access, mapping, GIS, and global positioning system
(GPS) integration to users out in the field via handheld and mobile devices.
GMS4
http://www.scisoftware.com/products/gms_overview/gms_overview.html
Ground water modeling software is now available. It is compatible with Vector and Raster data. GMS4
is installed and running on all machines in the Lab.
Advanced Lab
Remember the advanced lab is for the Special Topics in GIS class and those computers are not student use. Although they have the argonet option for log in they are not configured to be used in the argonet domain. If you wish to use these computers for research you should request access from your advisor and cc me on the email. Just state the reason that a general pc or the computers in the GIS lab will not suffice for your research
license
We have a new license server (email stu for details)
Student Software
ESRI and ERDAS products should only be installed in the GIS lab, the advanced lab and on faculty machines. Under no circumstances should they be on a student machine. ESRI has many affordable options for purchasing the software for students as well as giving granting it for free to environmental projects. The one student who took the time to complete all the grant paperwork received ArcGIS and Spatial Analyst free of charge.
