Research Facility Executive Summary

The Research Facility, shared by the College of Arts and Sciences departments of Archeology, Biology, and Public History, will be adjacent to the Maritime Museum. The project will be designed, constructed, owned, and operated by the University of West Florida.
The facility will have a variety of spaces including classrooms, stadium seating interactive theater, wet labs, research labs, and demonstration labs for undergraduate and graduate students involved in coastal and oceanic laboratory processes, and offices. The building concept includes the following: Ground Use Square Feet – 7,500 (total of 22,500 gross square feet) Occupancy – 200 Location – Adjacent to the Maritime Museum (the University will be flexible) Height – 48 Feet Levels – 3
Conceptually, the facility will include the following interior spaces: Classrooms (3) – General purpose - two (2) classrooms having flexible set-up configurations. Lecture - one (1) having tiered seating of 100 person capacity. Wet Research Labs (7) – Two (2) will be setup of aquaria or large plastic research tanks on the ground level of the building. The outdoor tank area will be contiguous. Five (5) - research labs will have fume hood, de-ionized water supply, air supply, seawater hose, and general purpose 110v and medium voltage 220v electrical at bench tops. Offices: Seven (7) fixed and one (1) modular offices spaces as follows: a) One (1) for the Marine Research Center Director, b) six (6) fixed wall faculty/investigator, c) one (1) modular partitioned shared office for graduate and undergraduate students with an occupancy for six (6) persons, and d) one (1) Welcome Desk/kiosk work station within the entry vestibule. Conference: One (1) large conference room with an occupancy of 15 persons. Demonstration lab: One (1) with touch tanks, wet tables and aquaria, field guide library, and benches. Library and Computer Lab: Shared space having a capacity for twenty-four (24) student workstations and adjacent research reference activity space with an additional occupancy of thirty (30) students.
Exterior Space: The two exterior facility requirements will be: a) an exterior fenced/secured adjacent land area for artifact tank restoration will require 5,000 ground square feet, and b) approximately eighty (80) linear feet of adjacent boat dock for research vessels accommodating a draft/depth below the water line of 4 feet.
