
Learn Pensacola's history from "the ground up"!
Overview of Program:
- 1-week social studies enrichment camp
- Designed for incoming 4-6 graders
- Students will follow the artifacts trail and learn how archaeologists discover and study ancient remains to the preservation and display in a museum.
- Work in the Florida Public Archaeological Network lab sorting actual artifacts recently excavated from local sites
- Build a deep appreciation of Pensacola's rich and diverse history and archaeology. Knowledge pertaining to Pensacola's pre-historic past, colonial and more modern history.
- Develop an understanding through hands-on activities related to terrestrial and underwater archaeology.
- Learn the fundamentals practices that make archaeology a science
- Students will tour museums and houses during the week:
- Historic Pensacola Village
- the Florida Public Archaeology Network
- St. Michael's Cemetery
- Create a personal Archaeology Field Book with daily field notes.
- Example activities:
- Living History demonstrations to illustrate life in colonial Pensacola
- Native American games
- Create your own boat and learn how a boat's design (propulsion, cargo space, weight) determine archaeological research.
- Design a camp museum exhibit and learn how a curator works with artifacts

What you will gain?
Campers will gain knowledge of the science of archaeology by exploring Pensacola history. Because of Pensacolas location and far-reaching past, it is an excellent city to learn about skills necessary for the practice of archaeology and history. Pensacola history will be the foundation to learn how archaeologists and historians work together in order to understand the past.
Family Friday Showcase:
Parents and family members are invited to attend a student-created museum exhibit show. More information on time and location will be available the first day of camp.
