Program Information
The teacher education program is designed to allow students to develop
knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders in education. Course
work is structured so students develop a thorough understanding of the
professional writing, presentation, evaluation, teaching, and public
service skills. Graduates from this program have the skills necessary
to become leaders in public schools, service agencies, and higher education.
Options in this specialization are alternative / special education or
teaching and learning.
Alternative / Special Education
This specialization is designed for individuals who are working with
or intend to work with populations of at-risk children and youth enrolled
in the public school system. The specialization focuses on training
and educating supervisors and administrators who will be responsible
for planning and evaluating programs and systems in the area of alternative
and special education. These individuals will also become human resource
managers who administer and manage activities that involve rehabilitation
or intervention related to at-risk populations of children and youth.
The program is basesd on the applied-practitioner model and an ecological-integrative
approach. Relevant theory, knowledge, and skills will be developed through
course work, practiced through applied instructional and research projects,
demonstrated through required competencies and dissertation, and assessed
through preliminary qualifying examinations.
Teaching and Learning
This specialization is designed for individuals interested in becoming
leaders in teaching and learning and related areas. In addition, this
degree facilitates a leadership role in teaching and learning, junior
/ community college, or other educational settings. The degree will
provide a background for those wishing to work in state, national, or
overseas educational agencies. In addition, the program provides a knowledge
base for practicing instructional design in military, pursuing an instructional
leadership position in a health-related field, industrial training programs,
or governmental projects. The program is designed to enable students
to use various research-based teaching and learning theories and to
analyze and assess teaching and learning systems. This specialization
has an emphasis on conceptual interaction between teaching and learning
theory, research, and practice. The UWF model of the Empowered Person
and Professional Taking Action will shape the doctoral candidate's competencies.
The doctoral program has been approved by the Florida Department of
Education (DOE) and guided by the national organizations in this field
including the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development
(ASCD).
