Writing and Research Resources

The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing is essential to any technology job and is a requisite skill for all of our courses, at all levels. The University offers several resources to help students with their writing and research:

UWF Library

The John C. Pace Library, located in Bldg. 32, houses more than 752,000 volumes, 1.2 million microforms, and 5,100 serial subscriptions and provides access to thousands of full-text electronic journals. The library is also designated as a regional depository for publications of the United States government and the state of Florida. The Library Web site provides information about the library as well as controlled access to many library services, including databases and online journals. To log on, you will need your student Nautilus card number.

MathStat Lab

The Mathematics and Statistics Tutoring Lab is located in Building 38, Room 147. The MathStat Lab is provided by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for the purpose of providing tutoring to UWF students in the areas of Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Pre-calculus Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I, II, and III, Elements of Statistics, Mathematics for Liberal Arts I and II, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Discrete Mathematics. UWF Writing Lab

The University Writing Lab, located in Bldg. 51, Room 157, is available to assist students with proper procedures for writing papers and documenting sources. The Writing Lab offers extensive online resources, and you may also e-mail questions to writelab@uwf.edu.

UWF Learning Center

The UWF Learning Center is located in Building 52, Room 151. The purpose of the UWF Learning Center is to provide face-to-face and online tutoring assistance and academic support services to students currently enrolled at UWF. The UWF Learning Center is the only tutoring lab that offers tutoring assistance in all subject areas. Other services offered include preparation for the GRE, CLAST, and Florida Teacher Certification Exam tests. Please visit the UWF Learning Center web site for more information.

SAIL Lab

The Student Access Information Lab, or SAIL Lab, is located in Building 79. The SAIL Lab is a general purpose 24 hour access lab for use by students. Accessibility stations are available for disabled students. Please visit the SAIL Lab web site for more information.

UWF Plagiarism Policy

The UWF Student Handbook, Code of Student Conduct, Academic Misconduct, states: “Plagiarism. The act of representing the ideas, words, creations or work of another as one’s own.” Plagiarism combines theft with fraud, and the penalty is correspondingly severe: failure for the assignment and, in some cases, for the entire course. At the instructor’s discretion, she/he may recommend that the student be suspended from the university. Ignorance of the rules about plagiarism is no excuse for it, and carelessness is just as bad as purposeful violation. Students who have plagiarized have cheated themselves out of the experience of being responsible members of the academic community and have cheated their classmates by pretending to contribute original ideas.

College

COPS Pickens Instructional Classroom

The College of Professional Studies Pickens Instructional Classroom is located in Building 86, Room 108. Established in 1997, the College of Professional Studies Pickens Instructional Classroom was made possible with appropriated funds from Dr. and Mrs. William Pickens in support of the College’s technology initiative. The purpose of the Pickens Instructional Classroom is to provide our College students and faculty the opportunity to utilize technology to boost learning potential. The Pickens Instructional Classroom has 30 computers and the instructor podium includes a SMART sympodium ™  presentation environment. Specialized software available in the Pickens Instructional Classroom includes SPSS, MatLab, Primevera, and Sage. Hours of operation are Monday thru Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, except when otherwise posted.
