Electrical and Computer Engineering Tablet PC Recommendation
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of West Florida is strongly recommending that all students entering the electrical or computer engineering programs in the fall of 2005 have a Tablet PC. All students who register for EEL3111, EEL3135, EEL4834, or EEL3701 in the fall semester of 2005 will find the Tablet PC useful in completing assignments in those courses.
Why the Tablet PC?
The Tablet PC differs from the notebook PC in that it converts to a writing/drawing tablet which enables the student to fully participate in the interactive distance learning environment. For example: An engineering professor may electronically distribute assignments and students are able to respond electronically by hand-writing equations, drawing schematics and graphs, and working collaboratively on group projects. The Tablet PC will facilitate vastly improved communication of graphical and mathematical concepts between instructor and student. The following website has a great article and video clip of how the Tablet PC has been incorporated into the program at MIT.
What are the minimum specifications for the Tablet PC?
Processor: 1.6Ghz minimum single processor, 2Ghz or better preferred or 1.2Ghz minimum dual core processor
Memory: 1gig RAM minimum, 2gig RAM or better preferred
Hard Drive: 80gig Hard Drive minimum
Operating System: Windows XP (NOT Vista – some of our software does not support Vista)
Office software: Microsoft office or Open Office (free download from openoffice.org
How do I purchase a Tablet PC?
Students are responsible for purchasing their Tablet PC. You are not required to purchase a specific Tablet PC system from a specific vendor; however, we expect that you will follow the required minimum configuration when you configure a system for purchase.
What if this is not my major?
If you are taking a small number of engineering courses, and this is not your major, please see the department for special instructions.
