We offer a variety of comprehensive courses for novice to advanced boaters as well as two-hour seminars that provide a solid understanding of a variety of boating topics.

Maritime Education Online Course Process

Online Comprehensive Courses

We offer a natural progression of courses, from novice to advanced, for any boater. These in-depth courses typically run between 6 and 8 weeks. USPS membership is not required to take these courses but tuition discounts are available for members.


Schedule: 8 weeks, 24 contact hours upon registration.

Building on the basics of recreational boating, the Seamanship course adds foundational information for continuing boater education.

The first in the USPS navigation course sequence, Piloting covers the basics of coastal and inland navigation. The course includes many exercises that develop the student’s skills through hands-on practice and learning.

Cruise Planning

Schedule: two weeks, six contact hours upon registration.

This course covers topics of interest for someone planning a cruise including preparation and planning, anchoring, security, chartering, and cruising outside the US.

Learn about basic sailboat designs and nomenclature, rigging, and safety then tackle the physical aspects of sailing forces and techniques, sail applications, marlinespike, helmsmanship, and handling of difficult sailing conditions.

The course focuses on how weather systems form, behave, move, and interact with one another and reflects the availability of all sorts of weather reports and forecasts on the Internet.

Seminars are a great way to learn about a specific topic concentrated into a manageable, two-hour commitment. These focused online sessions help you round out your understanding and knowledge of a variety of boating topics including Boat Handling, Navigation, Facing the Environment, Safety and Techniques.
