Language and Culture Courses

Our Language and Culture personal enrichment courses allow students the opportunity to learn about culture and customs from experienced instructors. Autism Awareness

Upon completion of this online, self-paced course, students will have acquired basic knowledge about autism spectrum disorders, a conceptual understanding of autism, the ability to discuss current criteria used to identify individuals who are autistic, and be informed of examples of intervention methods, behavior management strategies and therapy approaches currently available to facilitate the developmental progress of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Note: To successfully complete the course, students will need a copy of The Autistic Brain: Thinking Across the Spectrum by Dr. Temple Grandin and Richard Panek.

Conversational Japanese II

Dates: September 27 - November 15, 2018

Designed for people who have taken Conversational Japanese I or are comfortable with basic Japanese language including useful daily expressions, basic vocabularies, and daily conversation. This course introduces more complex sentence structures, vocabulary, and conversation skills. Various teaching materials including cards, video, games, and role-play will be used. Japanese Sushi Workshop

Date: Saturday, February 9, 2019

Learn how to make sushi in this exciting 2-hour workshop! There are many exciting aspects of sushi-making that we will explore. From the rolling to the pressing, this workshop will provide everything you’ll need to know. Sushi is commonly made with raw fish; however, you can also use vegetables, ham, cheese, or a variety of other ingredients. We’ll also learn about the finer points of how to properly make sushi rice. You can showcase your creativity and show off your skills at your next family gathering or party! Registration closes on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. Limited space available.

Let's Learn Japanese: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji Writing

Dates: February 7 - March 21, 2019

Students will learn simple words, phrases and expressions of the Japanese language. Mastery of the correct stroke orders for Japanese characters will also be covered. Upon completion of the course, students will understand how to read and write Hiragana, Katakana, or Kanji. Students will choose one of the writing systems to focus on and learn at their own pace. This course is designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of the written form of Japanese language but is also perfect for more advanced Japanese learners. Shotokan Karate - Spring

Dates: 1st Half: Jan. 8 - Mar. 5, 2019 / 2nd Half: Mar. 7 - May. 2, 2019

Beginner, intermediate and advanced levels welcome! This class examines the methods involved in traditional Karate-do, or 'Way of the empty hand,' through a traditional Japanese style known as Shotokan Karate. With a membership in over 100 countries, the JKA is the world’s largest and most prestigious karate organization. Recognized heir to the Shotokan karate tradition, it is the only legal karate entity officially approved by the Japanese government as an association of members for the promotion of karate. This course will further stress the importance of the health benefits and unarmed self-defense techniques resulting from physical conditioning and mental discipline. A plain white Ji (uniform) is required for this class. Uniforms are available from the instructor at an additional cost, or students may provide their own.

USPS Maritime Education Online Courses

We offer a variety of comprehensive courses for novice to advanced boaters as well as two-hour seminars that provide a solid understanding of a variety of boating topics. These in-depth courses typically run between 6 and 8 weeks. USPS membership is not required to take these courses but tuition discounts are available for members.
