A grant was awarded to UWF in January 2009 from Florida's Great Northwest to develop and deliver a new executive style online program for the Master of Science degree in Computer Science - Software Engineering specialization at the University of West Florida, to meet increasing workforce needs within Florida's Great Northwest.
Twenty-five students from within Florida's Great Northwest region likkely to enter the job market in Florida upon completion of their degree were selected for the first annual cohort which began February 19, 2009. A new cohort of 20 students will being each year in January.
The 2010 cohort of Florida residents will receive 80% of their tuition through scholarship funding. The Executive SE program is structured so that students complete their Master's of Science degree in Computer Science -- Software Engineering specialization within one calendar year. Students start in January and graduate in December by taking two courses during four 8-week terms and a project/internship during a fifth 12-week term. This format places a full-time educational load on students during this year. Laptop computers preloaded with all necessary software and be loaned to students.
Since information technology and software engineering are relevant to many domains, custom tracks for IT professionals in different domains have been developed as part of this new program. Students may choose an elective track with general software engineering courses, an elective track that focuses on databases systems in which students will earn a certificate in Database Systems in addition to the Master of Science degree in Computer Science-Software Engineering specialization,, or an elective track for IT professionals in health care in which students will earn a Certificate in Medical Informatics in addition to the Master of Science degree in Computer Science-Software Engineering specialization.
The deadline applications for the 2010 cohort is November 15, 2009.
