Research Interests
My broad research interests include case-based reasoning, knowledge representation and the Semantic Web, information retrieval, management, and visualization, human computer interaction, and discovery of data and services in service-oriented architectures.
Current and Previous Projects
Intelligent Support for Cross-Domain Information Sharing (Airforce Research Lab Award)
Information sharing plays a critical role in everyday operations of government agencies and industry. While information sharing is desirable, it must be controlled to prevent leakage of sensitive content to unauthorized individuals and organizations. Reliable human review (RHR) is the preferred method to apply security policies to decide upon the release of information. Unfortunately, time-critical situations and the ever increasing volume of electronic documents make RHR no longer feasible. This projects aims to develop and apply new methods based on case-based reasoning and natural language processing to automatically learn security policies from marked-up data and to apply them to new text to identify sensitive content.
Integrated Intelligent Support for Knowledge Capture, Refinement & Sharing (NASA Intelligent Systems Award)
This project aims to design and implement methods to support domain experts in their effort to construct, navigate, share, and criticize knowledge models. The new methods combine interactive tools for concept mapping and case-based reasoning to support reuse of information in existing knowledge models during ongoing knowledge modeling tasks.
Common Instrument Middleware Architecture
The goal of this project is to build instrument grid networks and to provide access to real-time data sources to improve accessibility of instruments and sensors for scientists. To locate and access data sources linked to the network, an ontology was developed to describe the data sources. Applications may use this ontology to decide upon which data sources to select and how to access data generated by sensors or control actuators.
Digital Preservation
The constant evolution of software and hardware systems threatens today's digital content from becoming unavailable in the future. The project addresses this urgent problem by developing architectures that support future visualization of new and old digital artifacts.
