During 2009 the Department of Communication Arts expanded its graduate program into a degree in Strategic Communication and Leadership (currently under review). The new program reflects the latest research in our field, embracing a 360-degree perspective on using communication effectively in decision-making, strategy-building, innovative message design, and ongoing improvement.
This innovative program emphasizes in-depth knowledge of communication theory, research, strategies and practice. It recognizes that the current communication environment is dynamic, complex and has become increasingly challenging to manage. The MA in Strategic Communication and Leadership grounds communication policy and practice in correctly identifying public, organizational and promotional challenges with an eye toward formulating communication solutions that advance changes in knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors in appropriate audiences. The program features an optional graduate-level certificate in health communication leadership, one of the fields with greatest growth in the country. All courses in the certificate program count toward the master's degree.
Currently, the department features an MA in Leadership Communication. Applicants for Spring 2010 and Summer 2010 admission will actually be applying to the old program. However, in Fall 2010, students will be migrated to the program requirements for Strategic Communication and Leadership.
The Master's Degree in Leadership Communication is an interdisciplinary program for people who want to improve their ability to motivate others, accomplish change, build morale and loyalty, and stimulate innovation and teamwork. Students pursuing the master's degree will complete the 12 courses listed below. Most students complete the program in two years.
The graduate Certificate in Health Communication Leadership focuses on current issues and communication strategies in health care, the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. economy. Odds are that today's graduates will either work in the health care industry or have clients who do. The certificate program includes four courses, which can be counted toward the M.A.
