Claudia Stanny

Biography:

Dr. Claudia Stanny, director of the Center for University Teaching, Learning, and Assessment and associate professor of psychology, conducts research on skills assessment, faculty development, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. 

Stanny is a psychologist who applies her research expertise in memory, cognition, and statistics and research design to develop teaching strategies and curricula. 

She has authored and co-authored many scholarly articles and book chapters on assessment in higher education, faculty development, applied aspects of memory and cognition, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. In 2015, she was the lead author of a five-year longitudinal study, “Assessing the Culture of Teaching and Learning through a Syllabus Review,” published in Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education. By analyzing the content of more than 1,900 syllabi during four observation periods, the authors were able to document campus changes in the culture of teaching and learning. They also found that sharing syllabus information can improve organizational and learning outcomes. 

Further expanding on this line of research, she co-authored a study, “What Do Undergraduate Course Syllabi Say about Information Literacy?” published in portal: Libraries and the Academy. For this study, authors evaluated syllabi for all undergraduate courses during one academic term to examine how course-level learning outcomes and graded assignments aligned with information literacy. 

In addition to her research, she is a member of the editorial board of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in Psychology. As director of CUTLA, she provides consultations and workshops to develop professional skills in faculty. 

She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and master’s and doctorate in experimental psychology, all from Florida State University.
