Phlebotomist Training - Fall 2016

Phlebotomist Training at UWF

This course is designed for students from UWF who are pre-health professions majors. It introduces the student to hospital and laboratory operations, patient and worker safety regulations, and professional behavior. It introduces the student to ethical treatment of research participants. 

There are two practical training components. During the university phase, the student will be instructed by medical personnel who are expert at blood collection. The student will gain experience working with vacutainers, syringes, straight needles and butterfly needles. The hospital phase is 4 days of training with an experienced phlebotomist performing specimen collection on patients at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.

Admission requirements:

  • UWF student with a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Letter of recommendation from a faculty member
  • Completed Human Anatomy or Anatomy & Physiology II course
  • Background check must meet hospital onboarding criteria
  • Students must provide immunization records for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria/tetanus and varicella. Students must complete the Hepatitis B vaccination series, and test negative for tuberculosis by PPD or Chest x-ray*
  • The student must show evidence of health insurance prior to performing phlebotomy
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)*

*PPD testing must be performed within 1 year of training. The UWF Health Center can perform immunizations, titers and PPD testing. See the website at http://uwf.edu/offices/student-health-services/ for the most recent fees, and hours of service. The program can refer you to a trainer for BLS certification.

Tuition: $599 + Background Check and Drug Screen: $95

Schedule information: Class meets Fridays from 1:00 PM-4:00 PM starting 8/26/2016, ending 12/2/2016 (16 sessions). The internship training will be arranged with Sacred Heart Hospital to occur in November.
