Information Security Management

The area of Information Security Management is increasingly recognized as a promising career for information systems professionals as more organizations become wary of security threats to their information systems; and accordingly, invest in devising/adopting and implementing proper measures to protect their information assets.

Program Description

The Information Security Management Certificate Program is designed to address the non-technical aspects of information security. These include policy development and management, compliance management, security education training and awareness (SETA) programs, and the use of encryption technologies. The program will also address the personnel and risk analysis aspects of information security.

This is an undergraduate certificate program.

The four required courses are:

  • ISM 3011 e-Business Systems Fundamentals
This course is designed as an introductory course on MIS fundamentals and how they apply in the business environment. The course presents the theory and practice of organizational usage of information technology. The course also integrates the core business areas of management, marketing, finance, international activities, economics, security, and ethics as they relate to information systems. This course is a prerequisite for ISM 4483 and provides a basic framework to view the information system within an organization. It also introduces networking and security to the students.
  • ISM 3323 Information Security Management
    Prerequisite: ISM 3011
The focus of this course is on in-depth study of management and control of information systems security function in business organizations. Topic areas include IT controls and their evaluation, development of policies and procedures, encryption, risk analysis, contingency planning, and perimeter controls. Recent developments in IT such as nomadic computing and Internet and their impact on IT security management will also be explored.
  • ISM 4483 e-Business Infrastructure Management
    Prerequisite: ISM 3011
This course is a data communications course which focuses on the e-Business Infrastructure Management issues. The course explains the essential terminology in networking, and describes the design, media and protocols used in this area. It also addresses the characteristics of secure communications and privacy, and how public and private key encryption systems operate and are used in a business environment. The understanding of networks is critical in the area of security management. The level of networking that currently exists has expanded the definition of an organization’s perimeter, and has posed significant problems in the area of security.
  • MAN 3301 Human Resources Management
Prerequisite: Completion of 45 semester hours of college course work is required prior to taking this course.
This course provides an introduction to personnel administration. Topics covered include recruitment & selection, compensation & benefits, performance appraisal, managing labor relations, managing diversity, and employment laws (OSHA/EEO/unions) and regulations. This course provides the security manager with a detailed look at hiring and termination processes. These are points that require special care from a security point of view. The course will also introduce the students to compliance with government regulations (i.e., EEO compliance in the hiring process).
