Creating Static and Dynamic Web Pages
1. Preview and Save a Worksheet as a Web Page
You can view a spreadsheet as a web page with the Web Page Preview command. The Web Page Preview command is located on the File menu. It starts your browser and displays the worksheet as a static web page. A static web page displays information and cannot be modified. A worksheet can be saved as a web page to disk. The Save as Web Page command located on the File menu saves the worksheet as a web page. The Save as Web Page command displays the Save as dialog box. You musts specify a folder and file name in the File name box. You must also specify what you would like to save: the entire workbook or a selected sheet. Click the Save button to save the web page.
Static web pages can be displayed by any browsers. Users can display static Web pages but cannot make changes to the data displayed by the browser. Be sure to specify the disk and folder information as shown in Figure 8 on page EW 1.09.
The web page will display the information captured from the Excel worksheet. You can use the browser's print command to print the web page. To view the HTML code used to display the page, click the View on the menu bar and then click the source or page source command. The HTML code will be displayed. Use the Close button to close the browser windows.
3. Save a Chart as a Dynamic Web Page
To enable people to work with the data on your Web page, you can save it as an interactive web page. A user who browses an dynamic web page can enter or change the information on the web page. Dynamic web pages are created with the Save As Web Page command. But you must click the Publish button and then select the item to be published from the Choose list as shown in figure 12 on page EW 1.11.
In addition, you must click the Add interactivity check box and specify the type of interactivity functionality. For example: The type of interactivity that's available depends on what you are publishing. For a worksheet that contains a chart, select Chart functionality so that users can enter new values in your worksheet and have the chart automatically redrawn. Upon specifying the necessary options, click the Publish button.
View and manipulate dynamic web pages
Dynamic web pages must be displayed by Internet Explorer. In addition, the computer displaying a dynamic web page must have the Microsoft Office Web Components installed. To display a dynamic web page, start Internet Explorer and then type the location and name of the web page in the address box. Be sure to specify the disk and folder information. Internet Explorer displays the dynamic web page as well as the Excel worksheet. Users can make changes to the data displayed in the worksheet. Changes made to the web page do not effect the original worksheet.
