Fun with Science!

FUN WITH SCIENCE! is a hands on science program for kids in grades 6, 7, and 8. It is offered in conjunction with the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition's Science Saturday Program. Fun with Science! sessions are held one Saturday a month during the school year. Each session is led by an UWF science faculty member and is scheduled for 9:30-11:30 AM on a Saturday morning. There will be a brief introductory lecture for each session followed by the activity period where the students perform the hands-on experiments. Activities will be fun, very hands-on, and appropriate for middle school kids.

Each session will be held on the UWF main campus. All sessions will start in building 58A room 101. Please see the UWF campus map for directions:

Schedule

April 25 -Two Sessions

Geographic Informations Systems (20 students) - A geographic information system (GIS) captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that is linked to location. GIS technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, asset management, archaeology, environmental impact assessment, urban planning, cartography, criminology, geographic history, marketing, logistics, and other purposes. In this 2-hour Fun with Science- GIS session, you will first watch a video show about what GIS is and what a GIS can do. Then you will get hands-on experience of exploring GIS by using ArcGIS software and population/environment data for Pensacola area.
Plant Biology Part II (30 students) - Plants reproduce by flowering to produce a seed that is often encased in a fruit. In this session, some common flower types will be dissected to learn about the organs that make up the flower. We will also examine various types of fruits that serve a way to spread seeds in nature and are often edible. CLOSED

Each session has an enrollment capacity based on the location and experiments. Participants must register for each session in advance, and registration will be separate for each individual session.

All registrations must be conducted via our new web-based application process. No phone or email registration will be accepted. The registration process will open 7-10 days prior to each session and will remain open until all slots are filled.
