A degree in Chemistry provides a great background for entrance into medical, dental, veterinary, pharmacy, and many other professional medical graduate programs. The chemistry curriculum will help to prepare you for the entrance exams (MCAT, PCAT, OAT, DAT, etc.) as well as for success once enrolled in the graduate programs. The chemistry degree plans offer students the flexibility to take elective courses in order to fulfill their prerequisites and they also prepare them for their entrance exams. As shown in the table below, students majoring in the physical sciences (e.g. chemistry) generally perform exceptionally well on the MCAT.

In addition, a Chemistry Degree provided graduate with an array of other career options. For various reasons, many students will decide not to attend medical school, and a chemistry degree will provide the opportunity to attend graduate school in the field of chemistry or biochemistry as well as pursue a well-paid career as a chemist. Students attending graduate schools in the sciences (chemistry, physics, biochemistry, etc.) generally receive a full tuition waiver and a stipend during their graduate studies.
Students interested in pursuing a career in the professional medical fields often choose to major in the B.S. Chemistry/Biochemistry or B.A. Chemistry/Biochemistry - Pre-Medical option. Students enrolled at UWF who intend to apply for admission to professional schools such as medical, dental, optometry, pediatric medicine or schools of veterinary medicine generally utilize the services of the Health Advisory Committee.
The Health Advisory Committee provides on-going advice (regardless of the student’s major), direct contact with the professional schools, brochures, applications, and other materials of interest to such students. The committee arranges visits of admissions officers from various schools and provides a means of introducing students to local practitioners.
