FTCE Information

The Elementary Education and ESE/Elementary Education programs lead to teacher certification. Students are required to pass the Florida Teacher Certification Exams (FTCE) prior to student teaching.


Teacher Certification

Upon graduation from UWF, students are then eligible to apply for teacher certification. Students who are getting a Professional Education Minor in order to be able to teach middle and secondary education are not required to take FTCEs to graduate but it is recommended.

Elementary Education and ESE/Elementary Education students are required to pass the General Knowledge Test (GK) prior to being admitted to TEEL. We recommend secondary students take this test as well. The GK includes the following:

  • Essay
    • 50 minutes
  • English Language Skills
    • Approximately 40 questions
    • 40 minutes
  • Reading
    • Approximately 40 questions
    • 55 minutes
  • Math
    • Approximately 45 questions
    • 100 minutes

Elementary Education and ESE/Elementary Education students are required to pass the Professional Education (PED) exam prior to student teaching. We recommend secondary students take this exam as well. This test includes approximately 120 questions and the time allotted is 150 minutes.

Elementary Education and ESE/Elementary Education students are required to pass the Subject Area Exam (SAE) for Elementary Education K-6. The following is included in the Elementary Education K-6 Exam:

  • Language Arts and Reading
    • Approximately 60 questions
    • 65 minutes
  • Social Science
    • Approximately 55 questions
    • 65 minutes
  • Science
    • Approximately 55 questions
    • 70 minutes
  • Mathematics
    • Approximately 50 questions
    • 70 minutes

ESE/Elementary Education students are required to pass the SAE for Exceptional Student Education K-12. This test includes approximately 120 questions and lasts 150 minutes. This exam is required to student teaching.

Students completing a minor in Professional Education in order to teach at the middle/secondary level, are encouraged to take the SAE that reflects the subject they wish to teach.

Applying for Teacher Certification

Upon graduation, students can apply for teacher certification through the FLDOE. There are application fees when applying for certification.
