Dr. Matthew Ruckman is Assistant Chair of the Legal Studies, Public Administration, and Sport Management Department.
Now beginning his 12th year as a Sport Management faculty member, he possesses a Master’s degree in Recreation and Sport Science from Ohio University and a Doctorate in Education from the University of West Florida.
As a faculty member, Ruckman has specialized in Sport Governance, including NCAA governance, policy development and policy enforcement. He has participated in NCAA compliance reviews and made recommendations for best practice. In addition, he has spearheaded comprehensive assessments of gender equity in intercollegiate athletics.
Ruckman is actively involved in research and evaluation projects in the collegiate sport industry. He has authored publications on student-athlete welfare and gender equity in intercollegiate athletics. His current research focuses on student athlete welfare topics including overall wellness and career preparation. He is also exploring fan satisfaction in the competitive collegiate sport environment. Finally, Dr. Ruckman is completing an evaluation project of the City of Pensacola parks system, developing a strategic plan for the parks, and recommending capital improvement projects.
For his Ed.D. Ruckman specialized in physical education and health. He has studied motivation among athletes and compliance of historically black colleges with Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. His work has been published in Journal of Intercultural Disciplines andICHPER-SD Journal of Research.
UWF’s Sports Management program has more than 100 majors and over a dozen major courses.
