Richard T. Glaze, professor of clarinet, associate professor of music and director of bands, teaches film music, conducting, instrumental techniques and applied clarinet.

Glaze found his musical calling early in life, but later discovered a passion for teaching students the skills they need to become professional musicians.

At UWF since 1990, Glaze has been a formative influence on the music department: He founded the jazz and symphonic band programs at the University in 1990 and 1991, respectively, and established UWF’s Woodwind Quintet and Saxophone Quartet.  As director of bands since 1991, UWF students are consistently selected to play in Florida Music Education Association’s All-State Intercollegiate Band, one of the largest music education professional development events in the U.S.

Before coming to UWF, he was director of bands and woodwind instructor at Okaloosa Walton Community College, assistant band director at Ft. Walton Beach High School and music specialist at Cherokee Elementary School. He has also been a member of and performed as principal clarinet for the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, second clarinet for the Pensacola Opera, and principal clarinet for the Okaloosa Symphony Orchestra.

The people who nurtured Glaze’s musical abilities are principle clarinet teachers Carmine Campione and Emil Schmachtenberg of the Cincinnati Symphony, and Tom LeGrand of the Houston Symphony. His principle conducting teachers were Drs. Terry Milligan and Robert Hornyack.

Glaze, who is an active member of the College Band Director’s National Association, was chair of the UWF music department from 2001 to 2005.

Degrees & Institutions:

He received a bachelor’s degree in music education from UWF and a master’s degree in clarinet performance and wind conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
