Bruce Swain


Dr. Swain, professor emeritus, served as department head 2001-2009 and taught journalism until his retirement in 2016.

His journalism experience included weekly newspaper editor, reporter for the Madison Capital Times and copy editor at the Louisville Courier-Journal.  He also reported part-time for the Chicago Sun-Times and the New York Times.

He wrote journal articles, conference papers and freelance magazine articles.

The Southeast Journalism Conference named him its 2016 Outstanding Journalism Educator.

Degrees & Institutions:

He earned a bachelor’s degree at Davidson College, a master’s degree at Harvard University and a doctorate in college teaching from Columbia University, all in English.
