Maritime Technology in Transition: Historical and Archaeological Investigations of the Schooner Barge Geo. T. Lock(8SRI491)
Lora Kathleen Holland
The primary focus of this thesis is to provide an analysis of a schooner barge vessel abandoned in the early twentieth century near Shields Point in Blackwater Bay, near Pensacola, Florida. This analysis, which incorporated both archaeological and historical research, situates the site within the context of Pensacola's maritime economy. This thesis specifically examines the identification of the vessel remains as the Geo. T. Lock and presents an examination of the vessel's hull to determine if the archaeological record reveals if any modifications exist on the vessel which would identify modification from a self propelled sailing vessel to a towed barge.
