Dr. Steven Brown
Brown has more than 25 years of experience in higher education, including service as both a faculty member and administrator at comprehensive and research universities. Previously, he was associate vice president and dean of the Mississippi State University satellite campus in Meridian, Miss. He was also dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Emporia State University, after serving for eight years as professor and chair of the music department, as well as associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts, at the University of Mississippi. Additionally, Brown has held teaching and administrative positions at Northwest Missouri State University, East Central University and the University of Northern Iowa.
During his tenure at Mississippi State University, Brown contributed to the ongoing growth and development of two satellite campuses, along with the MSU Riley Center. At Emporia State University, Brown helped lead the implementation of a number of interdisciplinary degrees, as well as a dual-admission program with Kansas community colleges. He was involved with the development and opening of the Gertrude Ford Center at the University of Mississippi, a major performing arts venue.
Brown received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Arkansas State University, and a doctorate of philosophy in music from North Texas State University.
