The Writing Lab’s Tutoring System

The Skill-of-the-Week Tutoring System is available to students, faculty, and staff who want to review the grammar and mechanics of writing or who are required by their writing professors to do follow-up skills lessons based on the students’ diagnostic test results.

Each thirty-minute- to one-hour session consists of instruction, an interactive review or discussion of the skill, and assessment. Each session is conducted by a trained Writing Lab assistant.

Before Trying to Schedule Your Appointment . . .

  • Locate the yellow carbon copy of your Lab Work Form.  You should've received this form if you took the Lab's Diagnostic Test.  You need this form to help determine which grammar sessions you need and want.
    • You may still attend our weekly grammar sessions if you have not taken the Diagnostic Test.
  • Determine how many appointments you'll need.  You are allowed to make appointments for the current week and the following two weeks only.
  • Nearly all students who need to attend our weekly grammar sessions should be able to.  During a normal week, we offer 35 grammar sessions a week.  And since our Tutoring Room can seat 18 students at a time, you'll have roughly 630 opportunities each week to fill one of those seats.
    • The only opportunity to make up missed sessions is to attend our Grammar Live @ 5! online sessions.  These typically take place only on Mondays, and they typically begin at 5:00 p.m.  These online sessions are the only ways to make up missed sessions.

Scheduling Your Appointment . . .

  • Either call or visit the Main Writing Lab.
  • Make sure you have the following to expedite the scheduling process:
    • your UWF Gmail address, and
    • the names of the specific grammar sessions you want to attend.
  • Check your e-mail for messages confirming your appointments.

What to Do Before the Day of the Appointment

  • Review the grammar rules.  The grammar session will not last longer than an hour, and there will be other students in the room.  Just as with any class, the sessions will be more productive if the students review the appropriate materials beforehand and come to the grammar sessions with questions.
  • If you need to cancel your appointment, contact the appropriate Lab office at least twenty-four hours in advance.  If you need to cancel your appointment while the Lab is closed, you may either call and leave a voicemail message or e-mail us.  Please give us your name, and the date and time of your appointment.

What to Do the Day of the Appointment, Before the Appointment Begins

  • Be early.  Under no circumstances will late students be allowed in the room because late students will disrupt a session.
  • Ask the Lab assistant in the Tutoring Room if you can enter because he or she may not be ready for students to enter.  If the Lab assistant would like you to wait, please do so in the hallway outside of the Tutoring Room until the Lab assistant announces that students with appointments can enter the room.
  • Bring a pen or a pencil.  You do not have to bring anything else.
  • Bring the yellow carbon copy of your Lab Work Form.
  • You are not allowed to use a smartphone, a laptop, a PDA, or any other electronic devices during the session unless you have accommodations granted by the Student Disability Resource Center.

During the Appointment

  • Each appointment will last no longer than one hour, so be prepared to participate and be present for the entire hour.
  • You will be asked to complete a worksheet that reviews the respective grammar rules, but the Lab assistants evaluate these sessions as "Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory."  The Lab assistants will grade your worksheet as Unsatisfactory only if you
    • sleep,
    • use prohibited elecrtonic device,
    • consume food,
    • are absent for a long period, or
    • are otherwise disruptive or not engaged during the session.
  • Hand your worksheet to the Lab assistant after the session ends.  We use those worksheets to track and verify your attendance.

After the Grammar Session Ends

  • We document your attendance on the official white copy of your Lab Work Form, and your professor will receive your Lab Work Form near the end of the semester.
    • We can make a Lab Work Form for you if you do not have one, and we will deliver this form to your professor near the end of the semester.
  • Continue to review grammar rules because you may not remember everything that was reviewed during the session.
