Alpha Psi Omega

The Alpha Psi Omega Chapter is the American National Theatre Honors Society/Fraternity. The organization was originally founded at Fairmount College, West Virginia in 1925 by Prof. Paul F. Opp.

Membership in Alpha Psi Omega is usually based on a point system and credentials, but has also been known to grant membership based on merit and activity within the theatre. The organization aims to support the theatre activity within the institution in which it is created.

The University of West Florida's Chapter (or Cast, as they are commonly known), Omicron Theta (OQ) holds a vision quite similar to that of the society as a whole. The Cast aims to model itself based on these principles:

  • Gather, support, and maintain interest and activity within the Theatre
  • Acknowledge and recognize achievement and advancement within the Theatre
  • Foster a mutual partnership with all aspects of the Arts, within the University and the Community

The student-run organization strives to strengthen the presence of the UWF Theatre Department on campus, and community by serving as a more direct and accessible contact to promote sponsorship and participation. The chapter is currently undergoing reactivation and preparation throughout the spring. The chapter will be fully active in the fall semester of 2007. A pledge class will be inducted in the late spring of 2007.

The technical program at UWF is in the early stages of development. In the next few years the students will work towards forming a student chapter of USITT. With three main faculty and staff members as mentors the students will become part of the USITT family and enjoy trips the Annual Conference and Stage Expo, as well as exhibitions, events, and local community outreach.
