What is the deadline for my application?
The deadline for application to the M.A. program is February 1st for admission to the program the subsequent Summer or Fall. All application materials must be postmarked or emailed by this date.
What materials do I need to submit?
A complete application is composed of :
- The online UWF Graduate Admissions Application and fee payment
- Transcripts from every institution you have attended (sent to Graduate Admissions)
- GRE scores (sent directly from ETS to Graduate Admissions)
- Letter of Intent
- Three letters of recommendation (one must be from a faculty member)
- TOEFL or other language test scores (international students only)
To what institution code should I send my GRE scores?
GRE scores should be sent to institution code 5833. The test scores are considered official only when they are sent directly to the Graduate School from the testing agency. Examinee copies are not considered official.
Do you require the GRE Subject test for Psychology?
No, the GRE Subject test for Psychology is not required for admission to our program.

How do I confirm that all of my materials were received? How do I get an update on my application status?
For materials that are sent to Graduate Admissions, you can check confirmation of receipt by logging into MyUWF (https://my.uwf.edu) and search for "Admission Graduate Application Processing". Click that link to find your graduate admissions status.
Can I get the application fee waived, or pay it after I am admitted?
It is the policy of the University of West Florida not to defer or waive the application processing fee. The application processing fee must be in U.S. currency, drawn on a U.S. bank. There is an option to pay via MasterCard, Visa, or American Express credit card when the web application is submitted.

When are decisions made?
The Graduate Admissions Committee meets mid-February and decisions are sent to applicants by the end of the first week of March.
Do you accept new students in Spring?
No, an admission is for the Summer or Fall only.
How do I find my UWF ID?
A UWF ID will be provided for you once your graduate admissions application has been processed. You can locate your UWF ID when you activate your account at MyUWF. Click on "Activate your account - New to UWF" to start the activation process.
Can I arrange to visit the campus?
Yes, the UWF Graduate School also offers a Graduate School Campus Visit that is a walking tour of the campus and includes a visit to our department and an opportunity to meet our department chair or our academic coordinator.
What financial support is available?
The Department of Psychology provides financial support with scholarship funds and graduate assistant positions. Information on these types of support are provided with the acceptance package to the program.
Can I attend the program part-time or via online/correspondence study?
Our graduate programs are designed for full-time students. Attendance part-time to our program is available per approval from the Associate Director of Graduate Programs or program coordinators. Online or correspondence study is not available.

If I email you my GRE scores, GPA, etc., can you tell me what my chances of admission are?
No, the GRE, GPA and additional submitted materials are all considered when making the decision of acceptance to our program. All materials must be reviewed and discussed before a decision can be made.
Are there any special instructions for international students?
Yes, please refer to the residency information provided by the UWF Graduate School office. Our international handbook also offers tips for applicants to our program.
Can I work while in the program?
Yes, but a full-time job is highly discouraged. Once accepted, please talk with your faculty advisor on the appropriate level of work commitment to ensure success in the program.
What should I put in my letter of intent?
In your letter of intent, you should identify what area of psychology you are applying to, as well as any subfield or particular topic(s) within that area that you would like to focus on. You should address which faculty member(s) you would be interested in working with, based on their research interests. You can also mention any class or applied research project that demonstrates your interest in this area of study.
Summarize what you have done as an undergraduate. What sort of research have you been involved in? Have you ever had any publications or presentations at a conference? Did you have a leadership role in a university student organization? Did you complete a volunteer experience as part of your undergraduate curriculum? Identify experiences that would set you apart from other applicants.
If there was a major issue that affected your grades (serious illness, family emergency, etc.) you can mention it as an explanation for the drop in your academics, but make sure to state it briefly and succinctly.
Is there a minimum GPA required for admission?
Yes, a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4-point scale, or a 3.0 GPA over the last 60 hours of coursework in the baccalaureate degree.
Is there a minimum verbal or quantitative GRE score?
We are still establishing our guidelines based on the new version of the GRE that was initiated in 2011. In general, percentile rankings on the Verbal and Quantitative scales are above 50%.
Is there a minimum TOEFL score?
If the international applicant's native language is not English or the applicant is from a country in which the primary language is not English or the applicant does not hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, he or she must take one of the following tests before consideration of admission.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- International English Language Test System (IELTS)
- Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)

English proficiency test scores are considered official only when they are sent directly to the Graduate School from the Educational Testing Service, Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey, 08541-6151, USA. English proficiency test information and registration forms are available in many locations outside the U.S., usually at U.S. embassies and consulates, at offices of the U.S. Information Agency (U.S.I.A.), from U.S. educational commissions and foundations, at Binational Centers, and from many private organizations such as the Institute of International Education (IIE), American-Mideast Educational and Training Services, Inc. (AMIDEAST), and the African-American Institute (AAI).
What if I don’t meet the minimum qualifications?
Students who do not meet the criteria for regular admission may be admitted by the School on a conditional basis. Also, students who have graduated from a recognized, although non-accredited, institution may be admitted on a conditional basis. Students admitted on a conditional basis are permitted to register for up to 12 semester hours, identified by the faculty advisor as appropriate to the degree, and must earn at least a grade of "B" on each of those courses or risk removal of their status to pursue graduate study. Admission on a conditional basis is not routine and is determined by the Graduate Admissions Committee.
How many students do you usually accept each year?
Our Master’s program has three specializations: Applied Experimental, Counseling and Industrial-Organizational. We usually accept a minimum of 10-15 students per specialization, but this varies based on the quality of the applicant pool. We typically receive over 100 total applications per year, thus admission is selective.
My bachelor’s degree was not in Psychology. Can I still apply for admission to your graduate program?
Yes, however you must have completed the following prerequisites for the program before you can register for any 6000-level course. In addition, certain graduate courses have specific undergraduate prerequisites. Please refer to the Graduate Catalog for this information.
Prerequisites to our program include:
- An introductory general psychology course
- An introductory statistics course
- An experimental or research methods course
- A psychology course in the areas of intended master’s emphasis
How much will it cost to attend Graduate School at the University of West Florida?
The tuition for the University of West Florida includes base tuition and mandatory fees. The schedule of tuition, fees and other special fees applies to all regularly enrolled students at the University of West Florida. Required fees are established by the Florida Board of Governors, Florida Legislature, and UWF’s Board of Trustees and are generally updated each fall semester. The University will make every possible effort to advertise any changes in fees when and if they occur.

Is on-campus housing available?
Yes. Approximately 1,788 students reside on UWF's main campus in the university's several residence halls in the heart of campus including, Southside, Argo, Pace and Martin Residence Halls and the University Village Student Apartments.
