Elder Justice Workshop: A Discussion of Elder Justice Issues
The University of West Florida Center on Aging Elder Justice Workshop was held on March 23, 2012 and was attended by over 140 participants from throughout Northwest Florida Region The speakers highlighted this issues of elder justice from a national, state and local perspective and the audience response was very positive.
Pamela B. Teaster earned her Ph.D. in Public Administration and Public Affairs and Graduate certification in Gerontology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She is internationally recognized for her research studies on elder issues including elder abuse. She will describe her findings and future research questions that are being addressed by leaders in the field at the national level, including how to recognize elder abuse, and abuse among the impoverished and aging veterans. She is currently a Professor at the University of Kentucky, College of Public Health; Director, Justice Center for Elders and Vulnerable Adults; President, Kentucky Guardianship Association; and Board Member, National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.
Eric Schurger, Attorney at Law, earned his law degree from the University of Florida, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of West Florida. Mr. Schurger is President of the Escambia — Santa Rosa Bar Association and Assistant Regional Counsel for the Florida Department of Children and Families. He represents the Agency for Persons with Disabilities as local counsel. He is admitted to practice before state and federal courts in Florida and Alabama.
Mrs. Allison Bryant has a Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Services, along with a Certificate in Gerontology, is a Federal Law Enforcement Training Center adjunct elder abuse instructor, and holds a Victim Services Practitioner Designation. She is presently the Statewide Elder Abuse Prevention Coordinator and is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating and operating the Elder Abuse Prevention program as described in Title VII, Chapter III of the Older Americans Act.
