The mission of the Department of Government is to educate students in the areas of government, politics, and international affairs, and by this means to foster more knowledgeable, informed, and active citizenship, as well as more enlightened future political leadership, in the communities to which they belong.

"Adam Smith on Justice and Social Justice"

Dr. James Otteson presents "Adam Smith on Justice and Social Justice"
Dr. Otteson received his BA from the University of Notre Dame, MA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and his PhD from the University of Chicago. He is executive director of the BB&T Center for the Study of Capitalism at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is also a Senior Scholar at the Fund for American Studies in Washington, DC, a Research Professor in the Freedom Center and Department of Philosophy at the University of Arizona, and a Research Fellow at the Independent Institute in California. Dr. Otteson has taught previously at Yeshiva University, New York University, Georgetown University, and the University of Alabama. Dr. Otteson has written several books. His latest book is titled Adam Smith, 2013.

The Department of Government offers a B.A. in Political Science, including a Pre-Law option, a B.A. in International Studies, and an M.A. in Political Science.

Ours are liberal arts programs, challenging students to think about timeless questions pertaining to the governance of human societies, such as the origin and evolution of law and justice, the workings of political institutions and processes, the exercise of political leadership, the comparative performance of regimes, problems of war and peace, and contemporary political issues.
