Scenic Hills Country Club
Scenic Hills Golf and Country Club at the University of West Florida was acquired by UWF BEI in 2012 to provide access to first-class athletic facilities and enhance educational opportunities for UWF students across multiple disciplines. It serves as a lab for UWF hospitality and management students to learn about the daily operations and management of a country club, restaurant and golf course.
The UWF golf teams are able to take advantage of the 6,730-yard, 18-hole championship course that features a Jerry Pate design. The course also features a 12,550-square-foot clubhouse that was constructed in 2008, as well as ancillary support facilities. As part of the public/private partnership, 20 percent of the annual net profits will be allocated toward faculty development, enhancing the mission of UWF. Scenic Hills Country Club is located just off Nine Mile Road at 8891 Burning Tree Road. For information about the course, tee times, membership or facilities rentals, please visit the Scenic Hills website.
Why did Business Enterprise, Inc. purchase Scenic Hills Country Club?
The purchase provides access to first-class athletic facilities, as well as enhances education for UWF students. The Jerry Pate designed 6,730-yard championship course comprises 150 acres and 18-holes. Additionally, the country club includes a 12,550-square-foot clubhouse constructed in 2008, as well as ancillary support buildings. How did BEI purchase Scenic Hills Country Club?
BEI prepared a financing package, conducted due diligence and obtained appropriate approvals. No University funds or state funds were used for the purchase. The purchase is a venture for BEI, a nonprofit corporation created in 2011 with a goal of pursuing effective public-private partnerships for the University, as well as creating new services and increasing alternate sources of revenue to support and enhance the mission of the institution.
Specifically, how do UWF students benefit from the purchase of the club?
Scenic Hills Country Club serves as a lab for UWF students to put into practice the skills and knowledge taught in the classroom. The UWF Department of Hospitality, Recreation and Resort Management, as well as other academic programs, are able to control the quality of the experience and give students a first-hand opportunity to learn about country club, restaurant, event and golf course management in a real-world environment. This opportunity sets UWF apart from other institutions. Further, having BEI own and operate Scenic Hills provides additional opportunities for UWF to partner with other colleges and universities to broaden educational offerings at both educational institutions.
Does UWF use the club for athletics?
UWF’s golf teams are able to take advantage of the amenities at Scenic Hills Country Club, and is the face of the UWF golf program. Students, faculty and staff have access to programs created through Recreation & Sports Services, continuing the University’s goal of enhancing student life. Potential partnerships include Professional Golf Association of America youth golf programs to give young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop through golf and character education. The PGA program and intramural tournaments can potentially offer additional opportunities to students and employees.
How does Scenic Hills plan to facilitate reconstruction of the 13th hole on the championship course?
Green No. 13 was repaired during February and March of 2015. Further work on this hole will occur pending resource availability.
