The University of West Florida (UWF) Black Employees Association (BEA) is an association of faculty, support personnel, and administrative employees who work for improvement in the plight of Black employees at UWF. BEA began in 1987, under the leadership of Dr. Godfrey Franklin. A few black faculty, administrators, and support personnel formed the organization to address various issues that affected Black and other employees at the University. Membership is open to all employees who have an interest in promoting equal opportunity for employment and advancement at the University.
Mission
The mission of BEA is to create conditions at UWF which enhance opportunities, and build partnerships to improve the status of Black employees at the University. To this end, BEA seeks to: identify and advocate critical issues affecting Black employees; establish partnerships with other University organizations, and other member institutions to advance issues affecting all employees with special emphases on conditions affecting Black employees; assist in the recruitment, retention, progression, and promotion of Black and other employees; and establish effective inter-institutional networks. BEA also supports the enrollment and retention of Black students at the University through scholarship assistance in the form of textbooks and emergency funds.
