Torn by decades of conflict, Afghanistan’s economy has been in ruins for many years.  Much of the population is unemployed and many among the unemployed have moved into urban areas.  Basic services are rudimentary or non-existent.  These factors directly contribute to lawlessness and strengthen criminal enterprises.  Diplomats and international relief workers have reported incidents of robberies, assaults and household burglaries as well as kidnappings for ransom.women grieve for kidnapped aid worker
